Meet Gwyndolen “Gwyn” Clarke-Reed Candidate for the Florida State House- District 92 “A Legacy of Service” |
|
Born in the Frog Alley neighborhood of Delray Beach, Gwyndolen “Gwyn” Clarke-Reed is a visionary leader, educator, and committed public servant. Understanding the need for a new voice in Tallahassee, Gwyndolen Clarke-Reed is once again answering the call to service as she seeks to represent District 92, a district that runs from Deerfield Beach south through segments of Pompano Beach, Oakland Park, Tamarac, North Lauderdale, Wilton Manors and Fort Lauderdale. Now retired after years of service educating youth in the public schools of New York and Florida, Clarke-Reed holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Health Science from Brooklyn College and a Masters Degree in Education from Adelphi University. With an interest in education, youth development, economic revitalization and citizen advocacy, Gwyn’s keen willingness to serve as a catalyst for positive community change has certainly been evident throughout her stellar career. Gwyn served 12 years on the Deerfield Beach City Commission, serving as the Vice-Mayor during her first year. A summer employment and mentoring program for youth ages 13 to 15 and a highly successful career development program are still operative after Clarke-Reed started them ten years ago, making a greater impact each year. Clearly, whenever her name is mentioned, it is always linked with service. In May 2002, Clarke-Reed’s noteworthy record of service was recognized by her colleagues when she was tapped to serve as President of the Broward League of Cities, the first Deerfield Beach government official ever to hold the post and the first woman of color elected to the position in the 45-year history of the organization. While in office, she served on the Board of Directors and in leadership roles for both the Florida League of Cities and the National League of Cities. During her tenure leading the Broward League of Cities, Gwyn championed the organization’s focus on issues including education, public safety, annexation and taxation. While heading this powerful governmental body Gwyn became known as an “effective, results-oriented leader.” When asked to describe Gwyn Clarke-Reed, those who know her comment, “She is a tireless worker, a true public servant who is committed to excellence, fairness and ethical governance. If there is a task to be accomplished, Gwyn is the person to call.” Recognized as one with great tenacity, Clarke-Reed battled an adversary that has become too common these days, and that is cancer. Over two years ago, Gwyn suffered from breast cancer, shedding more than thirty pounds during the course of her successful treatment. Maintaining this weight loss and relishing good health these days, this community leader and public servant is vibrant and even more active as she tirelessly supports worthwhile causes throughout Broward County. Gwyn lends her expertise to organizations like the Boys and Girls Club; Kiwanis Club; American Cancer Society; Mango Festival; Greater Deerfield Beach Democratic Club; American Association of University Women; Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.; the Common Highlands Homeowners Association; North Broward Hospital District Community Primary Care Committee; Broward Teachers Union-Retirees and countless others. A consensus builder, an accountable community leader who consistently demonstrates her knowledge about quality of life issues of concern to the public, a strategic thinker enthusiastic about proactively addressing issues through strategic action and positive change; this is the tapestry of public service that characterizes Gwyndolen Clarke-Reed, Candidate for the Florida State House, District 92. Attentive to pivotal issues such as education, health care, property taxes, affordable housing, transportation, youth development and senior services, Gwyndolen Clarke-Reed has exhibited noteworthy leadership in a variety of arenas impacting lives and transforming communities. The same can be expected of her as the Representative for District 92. Known for an unyielding sense of integrity, with a reputation as a hard worker among colleagues, Gwyndolen Clarke-Reed has set her sights on being the voice for District 92. Focused squarely on representing everyone across District 92, Clarke-Reed sees all of the area’s unique opportunities, and is poised to translate that vision into action to positively impact the quality of life for the district’s residents.
